Passionist priest and acclaimed cultural historian Thomas Berry died in Well-Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro NC, at 6:25 am, Monday, June 1, 2009.
Funeral services have been annouced:
Greensboro NC's St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, with Salesian Oblate Father Bill J. Ruhl or his delegate presiding, primarily but not exclusively for Thomas's family and the local community. Wednesday, June 3, 2009.
A Passionist Order monastery or church, as directed by Father Provincial Very Reverend Joseph Jones, probably in Jamaica, Long Island, New York, primarily but not exclusively for members of the Order.
Green Mountain Monastery, Greensboro, Vermont, open to all, details to be provided by Sisters Gail Worcelo and Bernadette Bostwick, co-founders with Thomas of the new religious Order.
A more general and public memorial service at St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City, where Thomas was honorary canon, details to be arranged by the Thomas Berry Foundation and directed by officers Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim, currently of Yale University.
Greensboro NC funeral events will begin with open-casket visitation 11 am - 1:20 pm in the Narthex [entrance] of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church (not in the funeral home) Wednesday, June 3, 2009, followed by the memorial service at 2 pm.
Since Thomas's remains will be sent to the Passionist Province of St. Paul of the Cross for the Eucharistic liturgy and afterwards to Green Mountain Monastery for final interment, the Greensboro NC memorial will conclude with a reception, 4 pm – 5:30 pm, hosted by the Passionists in Well-Spring Retirement Community Auditorium, 4100 Well-Spring Drive, a short distance from St. Paul the Apostle Church. [Take Horse Pen Creek Road northwest a couple of miles; at Drawbridge Parkway turn right; watch for the Well-Spring entrance on the left a mile or so down the road.]

The human family is in the midst of the most significant transformation of consciousness since its emergence in Africa over one hundred thousand years ago. Consciousness has been evolving for billions of years from the first cell to us. We are becoming aware that through our own consciousness the universe can know itself. This awareness reveals incredible new potential for our individual and collective humanity.

Simultaneously, we are the first species on this Earth aware that we can destroy ourselves by our own action. This may be the greatest wake-up call to the evolution of consciousness since the origin of Homo Sapiens. We now realize that we are affecting our own evolution by everything we do. This knowledge awakens in us the aspiration to become more conscious through subjective practices including meditation, reflection, prayer, intuition, creativity, and conscious choice making that accelerate our evolution in the direction of unity consciousness and inspire us to deeply align our collective vision.

THE CHALLENGE
At this juncture in human history, urgent global crises challenge us to learn to live sustainably, in harmony and gratitude with one another and with the living universe. The changes required of humanity are broad, deep, and far reaching. Only by acting swiftly and creatively can we birth a planetary culture that will bring well-being to every form of life in the Earth community. Cultivating a Paradigm of Aliveness:We regard the universe as deeply alive and conscious by nature. In a living universe, our sense of subtleconnection and participation with life around us is the basis for a compassionate and cooperative approach to living.

Encouraging Conscious Media:We must find innovative ways to use thenew electronic media as the mirror of our positive evolutionary story,investing in their capacity to reach across differences of generation,culture, religion, wealth, and gender to build a working consensus about our collective future.

Engaging in Social and Political Transformation:More sustainable waysof living will require the support of a more conscious democracy andvibrant civil society from which more enlightened leaders will emerge.All individuals should be encouraged to use their gifts to createparticipatory, responsible and compassionate models of governance.

Working for Integrity in Commerce:Conscious businesses that are awareof the scope, depth, and long-range impacts of their actions are key to achieving sustainability.. Business must become an ethical steward of the Earth's ecology and consciously establish an economic basis for a future of equitably shared abundance.

Promoting Health and Healing:The science of mind-body-spirit healthhas demonstrated the profound connection between the health of a wholeperson and the health of the system in which he or she lives. Wholesystems healing, respecting both traditional knowledge and modernsciences, must be supported in physical, social, and spiritual domains.

Building Global Community:The new story is about all of us who sharethis planet. Together, we can create a culture of peace that eliminates the need for armed conflict, respecting and appreciating the glorious diversity of our human family.

Please join us Saturday, February 28 from 10am - noon for the Creativity and Wellness workshop led by Solveiga Miezitis. All are invited to attend. The meeting room number (5-280) will be posted in the lobby.

The Creativity and Wellness workshop will involve self-reflective activities to promote personal growth and wellness. Participants will have a chance to co-create by drawing, mind-mapping, journalling, and sharing stories. The workshop will be interactive and fun!

Solveiga Miezitis is professor Emeritus at OISE. She has taught in the School Psychology Program in Applied Psychology and more recently in Adult Education and Counseling Psychology at OISE, as well as in the Psychology Dept at the University of Latvia. Her main research work is in the area of Prevention of Depression published in Creating Alternatives to Depression in the Schools.Her current interest is in promoting wellness. During the past decade she has conducted longitudinal studies on risk and resiliency factors in first-year student adaptation at the University of Latvia focusing on factors related to Positive Psychology.

The Holistic Educator’s Group meets Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon approximately every two months from September through April. The meetings are open to all who may be interested in holistic teaching and learning and are not exclusively for those who are associated with studies at OISE/UT. We have a number of captivating speakers each year who join us to lead workshop sessions which tend to be interactive, and participatory. Meetings are also an opportunity to network with those who have common interests.

Our meetings are at OISE/UT, 252 Bloor Street West between St. George and Bedford on the north side of the street. There is a notice board in the lobby where the Room Number (5-280) will be posted. The main floor coffee concession is sometimes open on Saturdays or there's a Tim Horton's just east of the building on Bloor. Parking on Saturday under the OISE building is fairly reasonable. Of course TTC is always a good option (St. George Station on the Bloor line). If you are planning to attend, please RSVP. skarsten@oise.utoronto.ca

The tickets for the party are ready and I am asking if each of us can sell at least 10 tickets a piece? Of course more would be great too, but 10 each would give us the funds we need to keep The Acacia Children’s Project going & growing.

If you are interested in being part of my Sales Team, please call me and I will put you on my list. We will be working together to reach our goal of selling 10 tickets each. That would mean a total of 200 tickets which is what we need to meet our budget requirements this year. Of course, I encourage anyone that wants to sell more to go ahead. Surpassing our target goal would be wonderful too!

The tickets are at the office and you can call me directly to arrange pick-up or if you would like them mailed. The way it works, you sign off for the number of tickets you take, then 1 week prior to the event, you return any unsold tickets along with the funds you have raised. This year we will have prizes for those that sell the most tickets. To be announced at a later date.

Also, just so we are all aware, Revenue Canada does not allow us to receipt tickets to events. That is because under the CRA rules, the purchaser is receiving something in return. However, all donations over $30 to the Project will be automatically given a tax receipt. So, please encourage friends who are not able to attend the Christmas Party to donate the price of the ticket or make a small contribution.

This year tickets are $30.

re: THE ACACIA PROJECT............................................................
The ACACIA project has been caring for and looking after 49 Aids orphaned children since 2004. We took these children from the streets of Embu, Kenya and made sure they are safe and living in a home with adults to care for them. We started a grassroots partnership in Embu, with the local community people. They are our partners and are registered as The Acacia Children’s Project, Kenya. It is these very people who have taken the children into their homes to provide a safe haven for the. We work closely with them every step of the way to ensure the basic needs of the children.

Phase I of the project provided the children with basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education, tuition for school and school uniforms. You cannot attend school in Africa without a uniform. Many of the children were on their own, being looked after by an older sibling (as young as 8) or grandmothers who could barely care for themselves. If you could see the pictures of the children in 2004 and then in 2008, you would see the undeniable improvement of health, happiness and shine in their eyes and smile. This project is of such great importance in the lives of these children and those who run the program in Embu.

Phase II of the project involved the development of land which was donated to the project. To date the land has been fenced in by local villagers for plans to create a farm. This provided not only protection of the land, but also work within the community. With our last fundraiser in June, we were able to donate 40 goats, 2 cows and some chickens in order to develop the farm. The intention is to teach both villagers and the children of the project to care for the land, feed the animals and provide on-going nourishment. Plans also include planting vegetables and possibly developing small gardens near the homes of villagers. Unlike other parts of Africa, fortunately Kenya is very fertile and it rains frequently. Ideal conditions for growing food.

Phase III is a micro-financing plan, still in development. With this plan, we will provide small amounts of funding to help develop self-sustaining business. For example, the milk from the cows and goats can be turned to cheese and other milk products and sold for income. This can also provide skills training for the children as they get older.

Currently, 4 of our children are ready to attend University, increasing the chances of a better future for each child who attends. This however, just means a little bit more work for us as it increases the amount of funds needed to keep the project in operation.

Although, focused on the needs of our 49 children, the project in essence reaches out and helps the other community members as well.

Next year, we are hoping to take a trip to Africa, with volunteers interested in helping to work with the people of Embu and our partners.

It is a very important project and I believe that if people know how we are positively affecting the lives of not only the children, but the community, that people will be more than happy to buy a ticket to our party.

Besides all the good they will be doing simply by purchasing a ticket, they will also have a great time!! We have some amazing entertainment lined up – and our PARTIES ARE ALWAYS A BLAST!
